Helmets Off

Feb 6, 2018

This was one of the best Super Bowls in the history of the NFL, because of how close the game was and how exciting it was from kickoff to the final whistle.  It was two teams who were mentally dialed in.  The stage wasn’t too big for these guys.

Another thing that really intrigued Scott was the Prop Bets.  What color of Gatorade will be dumped on the winning head coach? How long will Pink’s rendition of the National Anthem be? Who will win the coin toss?  The biggest Gambler was Doug Pederson, the head coach of the Eagles.  He was gutsy with his play calls and deciding to go for it on 4th down twice.  They called the “Philadelphia Special” where Nick Foles goes to the offensive line and changes the play and the running back snaps the ball and Foles rolls to the end zone and the running back pitches it to the tight end who throws it to the quarterback in the end zone.

With five and a half to go in the game, it was fourth and one again and they go for it, not only that but it was a pass play which is harder to convert.  Those gambles won Doug Pederson and the Eagles a Super Bowl Championship.

Scott has had many Super Bowl parties at his house.  It was one of the first times that everyone at the party actually watched the game.

Scott realized that Tom Brady usually plays well and wins with a chip on his shoulder.  He noticed that he didn’t have a chip on his shoulder during the Super Bowl.  On top of that, he wasn’t clutch because normally he makes big plays late in the game and that wasn’t the case and the magic ran out for him and the Patriots.  The Patriots have made winning a Super Bowl look so easy but that game reminded us how difficult it is to win a championship.

The coaching staff for the Eagles developed a game plan that centered around the style of Nick Foles.  Because he and Carson Wentz are different types of players.  That gives a quarterback confidence when you can stay in your comfort zone.  That paid off late in the game and he made the right throws when it mattered most.  Put that and aggressive play calling from your coach together and you get a championship.

Carson Wentz is not the happiest guy.  Yeah, he is going to get a ring but he wanted to get that championship as the quarterback.  It hurts him because he is a competitor.  Especially because he had a lot of their wins early in the year before his injury.  This is only going to drive Carson to be even better next year.
