Helmets Off

Dec 8, 2017

Helmets Off Host Scott Mitchell talks about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell receiving a new contract that a 5-year $200 million deal.  Scott believes that the NFL owners gave him the new deal because the NFL has increased revenue under his leadership.  But the NFL is looking at it for all the wrong reasons, they don't care about their employees.  It is all about money.  Scott thinks he shouldn't have gotten a new contract because of the few issues. First being that the television ratings are down.

The other issue is the Roger Goodell is not consistent with his punishments for players who run into trouble with the law.

The next issue is that they say that they support their players who protest but that isn't the case.  That he only cares about making money and nothing else.

Scott explains it very simply of what is going on in the NFL. Ratings are not down because of the protests or other events going on.  Scott explains the free agency coming into the league after his 4th season.  You had to have played at least 4 seasons before you were eligible for free agency.  Scott believes that the NFL free agency has watered down the league and their is no consistent rosters.  Too many turnover.  Some teams in the NFL don't follow the structure of the salary cap.  Where you make more money, the more years you are in the league.  But most teams keep the young guys, putting the veteran players out of a job or a team.  Also, the chemistry is gone within most teams.

The NFL needs to tone it down on the hits.  Some are unnecessary and others are just football plays.  NFL leadership is trying to change the game when it doesn't need to.  If the league continues to trend like this, the revenue will go down.

The way we view anything is gone from the television.  It is all about streaming now.  This is going to change the viewership in the NFL.  People don't watch their TV's anymore.  Everything is on their phone.  Is Roger Goodell a good leader?  Scott doesn't think so.
