Helmets Off

Apr 9, 2018

Scott has a mini me.  It's an action figure of him that was produced in the nineties.  And yes, his helmet comes off.

Scott doesn't have a favorite NFL team right now.  Everything is different now at the teams he once played for.  All new players, new front office, new jerseys.

He likes watching the NFL, but only because he likes watching really good quarterbacks.  He's a fan of Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, etc.

He played the position, he understands how it feels and what it's like.  He understands reading the defense and what it takes.

So he's really getting into watching the new crop of NFL quarterbacks.  That's what he watches.  Not just one team.

Golf is his other passion.  The Masters has been on his mind a lot.  The Helmets Off podcast was inspired by Billy Casper.

Scott once got an invitation from Billy to be his guest at the Masters.  Access to all the days, and events, and a pre tournament round of golf with Casper.  It turned out to be a fundraiser. $25k was the buy in.  But now Scott regrets not going.

Once you win the Masters, you're in for life.  You can compete every year in the tournament.  Automatically eligible.  It's a cool tradition and the event always has some old timers who enjoy coming back.

This year belonged to the young players.  Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, these were the stars.

There is nothing like Augusta National.  It's like a botanical garden.  The approach shots are brutal.

You have a guy like Jordan Spieth, who has won the Masters. He has one specific hole.  A year ago, he was leading by 4.  Then he got to Hole 12.  It's not a long hole.  Jordan hit it into the water a few times.  Then finally this year he birdied 12.  And that's not easy.

Tony Finau finished in the top 10.  That's a big deal because now he's guaranteed a spot in next year's Masters.

You have to hand it to Patrick Reed.  He really earned it.  He came up with some huge shots and held off the best in the world.

Scott Mitchell takes his helmet off to show you the inside scoop of all kinds of sports from football to even golf. Scott Mitchell is a former NFL quarterback who was a star quarterback at the University of Utah before going on to have a professional career playing with the Miami Dolphins, the Orlando Thunder, the Detroit Lions, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Cincinnati Bengals. Scott also hosts the podcast Rivals with former NFL player Jason Buck.
